Costus Root CO2 Extract


Costus root CO2 extract is made from the ancient aromatic herb has been used in natural perfume making since the time of the ancient Romans.  In natural perfumery, it is used in incenses, and for creating violet bases, oriental perfumes, musk,  fougere,  chypre, and forest notes.

Costus root CO2 extract invigorates qi, and stimulates energy flow in meridians.  It releases blockage, both energetic and emotional.  Inhaling costus root extract strengthens the emotional body and the spirit, and increases life force.

It is relaxing and relieves stress.  It also heightens body awareness and sensitivity, and is known as an aphrodisiac.

Heart Note:  Deep, woodsy, with delicate, violet, iris, cedar wood notes

Base Note:  Warm, fatty, animalic, wine-like undertone which compliments the deep, woodsy, violet like aroma

A small amount goes a long way, and if overused in a blend, it can become overbearing and ruin the blend.

We recommend starting blending with a  minimal amount such as 1 drop,  and work up 1 drop at a time, until you reach the desired effect.

Blends well with a number or oils, including white lotus ABS, mastic and rose geranium essential oil.

Observations and Anecdotal Information

Costus root has been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic herbalism.

It’s extracts have been used to treat duodenal and gastric ulcers, lack of apatite, nausea and vomiting, and weight loss.  It is known to effect the spleen and large intestine.  It helps burn fat and increase energy levels.

It has also been used to treat respiratory conditions, including dyspnea, asthma, bronchitis, and coughs.

Costus root  CO2 extract can be applied to wounds, to enhance healing and eliminate infection.

It is highly anti-inflammatory, and can relieve inflammation from injuries and arthritis.

The anti-microbial activity of this herb has been laboratory tested against gram positive bacteria including staphylococcus aureus and entereococcus faecalis; and gram negative pseudomonas aeruginosa and salmonella typhii, and found to be extremely effective.

Costus is also an especially strong immune system enhancer.  It can be taken internally for this purpose, and should be diluted in very warm water with honey, and drunk as a tea.  One to 3 drops of costs root CO2 extract added to a cup of water makes a tea that can be taken over a period of several weeks to strengthen the immune system.
